The Son of Perdition Who Sits In The Temple
In the opening essay on the present subject, we focused on the plural nature of the two sons – the sons of God, and the sons of perdition. Although the precise phrase the sons of perdition does not occur in Scripture, in adjacent plural terms, we find ample support for the conclusion that all who are lost are “sons of perdition.”
For instance, in I Samuel, we hear of the sons of Belial – with the latter name related to the many appellations for Baal, or Beelzebub:
“Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord” (I Samuel 2:12).
Incidentally, in this particular example, we see Eli is their flesh and blood father, so it is conclusive they are being described as spiritual sons of the Devil. Indeed, in the book of Acts, when Paul is opposed by a particularly offensive sorcerer, he references him as a “son” of Satan:
“…thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?”(Acts 13:10).
As sons are also called children, there are many verses which speak of the children of perdition – with dozens of euphemisms for the evocative term perdition:
“…the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2, 5:5, Colossians 3:6)
“…the children of the wicked one” (Matthew 13:38)
“…the children of the devil” (I John 3:10)
“…the children of the flesh” (Romans 9:8).
We also see many instances of a singular term which is obviously applied in a collective sense, such as the rhetorical “child of hell”who was converted to the doctrine of the Pharisees. This type of colloquial usage is also repeatedly seen in a prophetic context, where we encounter the“daughter of Babylon” in several verses – and there was certainly more than one female associated with the fabled city.
Thus, the term “the son of perdition” -- absent any related modifiers such as the addition of a title case -- should be perceived in the same collective fashion.
What all of this means is the widespread assumption the alleged end time’s figure known as “the Antichrist,” who is touted as occupying a supposedly reconstructed Jewish temple, is built on thin air. And there is more, for even the title “the temple of God” can no longer be applied to anyphysical temple under the New Covenant.
“…there [shall] come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition: Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God”(II Thessalonians 2:3,4).
Any believer who has studied a concordance has learned there are two Greek words translated as temple – one used to describe a bricks and mortar building (hieron), and another to describe a holy place (naos).The former term is always used for a physical precinct, such as when the Devil took Jesus up to the top of the temple to tempt Him:
“And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the [hieron], and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence” (Luke 4:9).
Conversely, Paul admonished the believers to treat their bodies as the temple of God, and in those texts he always used naos,the word for a holy place:
“Know ye not that ye are the [naos] of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (I Corinthians 3:16)
Unfortunately, since we are now in the “falling away”mentioned in this very passage, only a few Christians have been taught the daunting truth that the “temple” which is occupied by the “son of perdition” is the naos of God – clearly a spiritual house:
“…the son of perdition [shall sit] in the naosof God” (II Thessalonians 2:3,4).
Since our bodies host the Spiritual presence of God, and are clearly said to be this “temple of God” where this mysterious entity will be“revealed,” it is an impossibility that these Scriptures are referring to a singular, wicked individual somehow entering into our bodies.
However, in the collective Spiritual sense, as the world’s believers (those who comprise the temple) have been subtly seduced into following another Gospel (the process called the “falling away” in the verse), it makes sense that this astonishing prophecy is actually described the collective children of disobedience who have gradually become occupied by the Spirit of Antichrist.
Worse yet, the term “falling away” is apostasia(where we get our word apostasy), and it specifically references a process of falling away from the truth – in essence, a forsaking of the truth in favor of another Jesus. Thus, the passage is actually describing a time in which the Gospel has subtly shifted from its original truth, and the temple of God (the believers in the prophesied period), have come to believe in a close counterfeit.
Ironically, those who cling to the “traditional” version of the Antichrist making a 7 year treaty, allowing the Jews to rebuild a temple, and subsequently betraying them by supposedly entering into the so called temple of God, have departed from the truth specified in the Scriptures– thereby fulfilling the prophesied process of falling away!
And there is much more, but suffice it to say that the“believers” who refuse to recognize the massive apostasy which has already occurred, are the children of disobedience (or the “sons of perdition”) who are about to be “revealed” for all to see.
